Exercise 3: Scenario Development: Morphosis [Theme: AIR]
The project poses the question: What happens when nostalgia fades in our post-apocalyptic future? In this envisioned world, robots and Artificial Intelligence (AI) become in-house and online assistants; smart technology and eco-tech serve as symbols of luxury and progress (e.g., Tesla, SpaceX); and Virtual Reality seamlessly integrates into daily life (e.g., Pokémon Go).
Our exploration will take place at Mallaig Harbour, located in Port Lochaber on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. This site offers a unique geological context that aligns with the geophilosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, as well as broader discussions on machinic discourse. It provides an opportunity to examine the fragility of local economic activities (such as fishing and smokehouses) and address pressing issues like pollution and marine debris.
Following a speculative and "machinic" logic, we will conduct our research remotely using MySQL Workbench to query databases. The resulting data will be visualized and analyzed to identify risks and opportunities in the North Atlantic Ocean, with a particular focus on Mallaig.
We envision a potential future where the harbour is repurposed and revitalized through alternative programs, reshaping the urban density of Mallaig in response to wider immigration and a politically isolated Scotland.
Inspired by this theme, we propose that as Mallaig's population grows in the future, buildings will rise taller and taller. This vertical expansion will eventually necessitate higher-level infrastructure for horizontal navigation. Over time, layered cities will form as new structures are built above the existing urban fabric.
