Exercise 4: Adaptation and Simulation: Machinic Becoming in Mallaig Harbour
In the future, people may choose to live higher and higher to avoid pollution. Even if they construct Mallaig Air City in the stratosphere, they will still be unable to escape its reach. When the world becomes uninhabitable, humanity may have no choice but to live in outer space.
I propose the creation of cosmic colonies in space, offering a pollution-free, self-sustaining environment. These colonies would operate independently, allowing people to live, work, and thrive without being affected by Earth's degradation. Individuals could travel to these colonies using capsule-like spaceships launched from central hubs within the cities. When resources are needed, they would access supply stations located in the colonies.
This vision enables life, work, and recreation in space, supported by a network of interconnected capsule spaceships. These capsules are categorized into three primary types: individual units, basic needs units, and entertainment units. All capsules would either remain stationary or move within a grid-like system, forming a dynamic and adaptable network.
To complement this system, I designed "highways" inspired by circulation patterns from LACMA. These highways intersect the entire structure, serving as thoroughfares for individual capsule units. No capsule would be permitted to remain stationary within the highways, as they function as the primary entry and exit points for the colony.
In this vision of the future, movement will not prioritize human needs but will instead center on machines. The city’s design is based on how capsules connect, interact, and share information with one another. The cosmic colony embraces the concept of kinetic architecture, where components of the structure can move without compromising its structural integrity. Drawing inspiration from the avant-garde ideas of Archigram and its vision for mobile cities, we may finally achieve a future where architecture is not bound to the ground or fixed in space but is free to adapt and mobilize.
